Using WeChat Pay for your education payments is fast and convenient, but you may occasionally have questions about transaction limits, document verification, or navigating the different payment channels. We have compiled the most common questions and troubleshooting steps below to help you complete your payment smoothly.
Is there a transaction limit for WeChat Pay, and why are there two payment channels?
The maximum limit for WeChat Pay is 300,000 CNY per request. If your payment exceeds this amount, WeChat Pay will not be an available option. When paying, WeChat offers two different channels based on your transaction size and bank limits:
- WeChat Direct Pay (微信财付通): An online payment method where you simply enter your WeChat wallet password. The limit for this method depends entirely on the limits set by the specific bank card you have linked to your WeChat.
- Bank Transfer via WeChat: Recommended for larger amounts. You complete the payment through your personal online banking. The limit depends on your personal bank account's daily transfer limits.
What documents are required for verification, and how long does it take?
You must upload the official Admission Letter (or Studying Certificate) and the Tuition Invoice issued by your institution. The WeChat compliance team will review these documents alongside the student's Chinese name, Chinese ID number, and the payer relationship you submitted. This review is typically completed within 4–6 hours (excluding weekends and public holidays).
How is "Bank Transfer via WeChat" different from Flywire's standard "RMB Bank Transfer"?
- Best Price Guarantee: Bank Transfer via WeChat is an internal WeChat channel for large payments and does not qualify for Flywire's Best Price Guarantee program.
- Speed and Confirmation: Unlike standard RMB Bank Transfers (which take 1-2 business days to process), WeChat bank transfers are typically confirmed in real-time, within minutes. However, please note that WeChat's real-time confirmation is paused during specific non-settlement hours (weekday evenings, weekends, and public holidays). If you transfer funds during these times, your receipt confirmation will be temporarily delayed until the banking system reopens.
When might my WeChat payment be automatically refunded?
In certain strict compliance situations, the WeChat team will initiate an automatic, forced refund without consulting Flywire. This happens if:
- You use the Bank Transfer channel, but the bank card you actually transfer the funds from does not match the card you selected in the WeChat Mini Program.
- The amount you transferred is higher or lower than the exact requested amount.
- Your document verification fails, and you do not update the documents or information within 72 hours.
Refunds are typically processed within a few hours of being initiated.
Can I use a family member or friend's WeChat account to scan the code?
Only the student's immediate family members (Parents, Grandparents, Spouse, or Siblings) can use their personal WeChat app to scan and pay.
Why can't I find the WeChat Pay QR code on my screen?
The QR code will only generate after you have successfully uploaded your required supporting documents. Once your files are uploaded and saved, the QR code will instantly appear on the page for you to scan.
What should I do if I accidentally close the WeChat Mini Program before paying?
You can easily retrieve your session. Open your WeChat app, swipe down on the main chat screen to view your recent Mini Programs, and open the Flywire (飞汇x微信支付) Mini Program. Tap on Transaction History (交易记录), locate your pending payment request, and click to continue the process.
Why can't I find WeChat's receiving bank in my banking app for the transfer?
Due to local regulations, WeChat's receiving bank account is a special reserve account under the People's Bank of China (备付金账户), rather than a standard commercial bank. If your personal banking app cannot locate this specific receiving bank, you will need to use a different bank card. To do this, return to the Flywire WeChat Mini Program and click "Change Card to Pay" (换卡支付) before making the new transfer.
