Your card issuer may charge additional fees for a card payment. These fees are set by your card issuer and are outside Flywire’s control.
The amount shown in your Flywire payment request includes Flywire’s fees and any processing fees charged by Flywire’s payment partner. Flywire will not charge additional fees beyond the final amount shown when you confirm your payment request.
Reason 1: Standard card issuer fees
Even if you pay in your local currency, your card issuer may charge fees if they process the payment as an international, cross-border, or foreign transaction.
These fees may include:
- Foreign transaction fees
- International payment fees
- Cross-border card fees
- Other card service fees set by your card issuer
These fees may appear separately on your card statement or may be included in the final amount charged by your card issuer.
If you are not sure why a fee was charged, contact your card issuer directly for clarification.
Reason 2: Currency mismatch and conversion fees
When you pay by card, Flywire submits the payment in the amount and currency shown in your Flywire payment request.
If your card is issued in a different currency from the currency selected for your payment, your card issuer may convert the payment into your card currency. This may result in currency conversion fees or a different final amount on your card statement.
For example, if your Flywire payment request is in USD but your card is issued in EUR, your card issuer may convert the USD amount into EUR using its own exchange rate and fees.
Why your card issuing country matters
When creating your payment request, select the country or region where your card was issued.
The available card payment options, amount, and currency shown in Flywire may depend on the country or region you select.
If the country or region you select in Flywire does not match where your card was issued, the payment route may not match your card details. Your card issuer may then apply its own currency conversion, foreign transaction, or cross-border fees to complete the payment.
How to avoid unexpected card charges
Before confirming your card payment:
- Check the payment amount and currency shown in Flywire.
- Select the country or region where your card was issued.
- Use a card issued in the same currency as the card payment option you selected, if possible.
- Review the More info section for your chosen card payment option before completing the payment.
- Contact your card issuer if you are unsure whether foreign transaction, cross-border, or currency conversion fees may apply.
