When making a payment from China, local foreign exchange regulations require specific identity verification depending on the payment method you choose. Please review the requirements below to ensure your payment is processed smoothly.
Whose ID is required for payment from China?
| Payment Method | Whose ID is required during booking? | Required ID Type |
|---|---|---|
| Alipay & WeChat Pay | The Student's ID | Mainland Chinese National Identity Card |
| RMB Bank Transfer | The Payer's ID | Mainland Chinese National Identity Card |
Payer Requirements
For RMB Bank Transfers (人民币银行转账)
When selecting RMB Bank Transfer, you are strictly required to provide the actual payer’s Mainland Chinese National Identity Card details. This is mandated by local foreign exchange regulations and is used directly for bank verification.
💡 Note for Alipay and WeChat Pay: While Flywire does not ask you to enter the payer's ID number during the booking process, Alipay and WeChat Pay conduct their own compliance checks. When you scan the QR code to pay, the platform will verify your identity. Therefore, the person actually paying via the app must also be a Mainland Chinese citizen with a verified Alipay/WeChat account.
What Chinese National Identity card details are required for RMB Bank Transfers?
When creating your payment request, please enter the details of the actual bank account holder making the payment:
- Payer’s Name: Enter the name exactly as shown on the Chinese National Identity card, using Chinese characters (do not use Pinyin or English).
- Identity Card Number: Enter the standard 18-digit Mainland Chinese National Identity card number.
- Match the Bank Account: The information must match the bank account holder. For example, if a parent or relative is paying on your behalf, you should enter their Chinese National Identity card details, not the student’s.
Important: If the Chinese National Identity card details do not match the actual bank account holder, the verification will fail and may delay or interrupt your RMB Bank Transfer.
What should I do if my Payer details do not match?
If there is a mismatch, you will receive a notification email. You can update your information by following these steps:
- Click the payment tracking link provided in your mismatch notification email.
- Log in to your Flywire account. (Guest users: Please sign up to create an account first, then link your request via "Add Payment").
- Click My Account > My Payments, and select the specific payment request.
- Click View Payment, then click Edit Payment Details.
- Update the Payer’s Name (Chinese characters) or Identity Card Number to match the bank account holder.
- Click Save to submit.
How long does Chinese National Identity card verification take?
Once you update the payer's information, the new review process typically takes 1-2 business days (excluding weekends and public holidays). You will be notified of the result via email. To avoid delays, please update your information as soon as possible.
Student Requirements
For Alipay and WeChat Pay
Alipay and WeChat Pay are designed for students who hold a valid Mainland Chinese National Identity Card. You will be asked to enter the student's ID details when creating your payment request on Flywire.
For RMB Bank Transfers
This payment method is optimized for Mainland Chinese students. If the student holds a non-Mainland Chinese passport, the transaction will likely trigger a manual compliance review, which can slow down your payment delivery.
💡 Faster Alternative: To avoid foreign exchange audits, we highly recommend non-Mainland Chinese students use UnionPay Online Payment (银联在线支付) or Credit/Debit Cards (Visa, Mastercard) instead.
