Wires and ACH credit transfers are two different ways to send USD electronically from your US bank account to Flywire. Both methods are faster and much more secure than mailing a physical check. Here are some common questions you may want to know to complete your payment smoothly.
What is the difference between a USD Wire and an ACH transfer?
Both methods send funds electronically, but they process through different banking networks and have different costs:
ACH Credit Transfer
This is typically free (though some banks may charge a 1.00-3.00 USD nominal fee). It processes through the Automated Clearing House network—the exact same system your employer uses to send your paycheck via direct deposit. Because it is highly cost-effective, it is slightly slower to process than a wire.
Wire Transfer
Wires process through networks like Fedwire or SWIFT. They are typically faster but usually cost between $20 and $30 to send. Please check with your specific bank for their exact wire fees.
Note: Flywire happily accepts both types of USD transfers!
How long does a USD Wire or ACH transfer take?
Wire transfers: You can expect Flywire to confirm your payment within 2-3 business days after the funds are debited from your bank account.
ACH transfers: Because of how the network operates, ACH transfers may take slightly longer than 2-3 business days to reach us.
What if my payment is taking longer? If you do not receive a confirmation from Flywire after 3 business days, please don't worry! Simply upload your proof of payment to your Flywire tracking page. You can also submit your proof of payment directly to our Payment Experience Team via our online web form, and we will be happy to assist you.
