The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a mandatory tax introduced by the Government of India. For international education payments originating from India, GST is applied to the service of currency conversion and remittance.
How is GST applied to my INR payment?
The method of calculating and collecting GST depends on how you choose to pay:
- Bank Transfer in INR: GST is calculated on the Flywire platform and collected by our local payment partner. You can view the breakdown during the "Review & Confirm" step and on your payment tracking page.
- Online Bank Transfer (SBI, HDFC, or Net Banking): GST is calculated and collected directly by our local payment partners. The applicable amount will be displayed on the partner’s platform during the payment process.
- Card Payments: Flywire does not collect GST for payments made via credit or debit cards.
How can I view the breakdown of GST on my payment?
GST is calculated based on the taxable value of the currency conversion service, following the relevant provisions of Indian GST law. Flywire provides a clear breakdown on your payment's tracking page, including the invoiced amount, TCS (if applicable), and GST. Click on the info (i) icon next to "Including taxes" to view the specific breakdown of GST and TCS (if applicable) for your transaction.
Is GST refundable?
GST is non-refundable. The tax is applied to the service already rendered—including currency conversion, KYC verification, and the international remittance process.
Once these services are performed and the funds are delivered to your institution, the GST is deducted and submitted directly to the Indian tax authorities. Therefore, if you receive a refund from your institution, the GST portion of your original payment cannot be returned.
