The refund process involves your institution, which approves and initiates the refund, and Flywire, which verifies and returns the funds to the payer. Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Refund Approval by Your Institution
- Once your payment has been delivered, the funds are still with your institution until they approve and initiate the refund.
- Processing time varies by institution but it usually takes a few business days to a couple of weeks for your institution to send the funds back to Flywire.
- Your refund reference will be the same as your original Payment ID, even for partial refunds.
- Tip: If unsure when your refund was initiated, please contact your institution directly.
Step 2: Flywire Processes Your Refund
- Once Flywire receives the funds from your institution, we’ll notify you by email.
- To comply with Anti-Money Laundering regulations, we may need to verify the originating account before processing the refund. If required, Flywire will reach out to you via email.
- Once verified, most refunds are processed within 3–5 business days. We’ll send a confirmation email once the refund is on its way.
- Tip: If your payment was linked to a Flywire account, you can track the refund in the "Your Payments" section under your Payment ID.
Step 3: Funds Are Returned to Your Account
- Once Flywire completes the refund, the funds are sent back to the originating bank account.
- Once your refund has been issued, the funds typically arrive within 5–10 business days, though processing times may vary by currency and payment method.
- Tip: Refunds are always sent to the original payer via the same payment method and currency. If a family member, friend, or agent made the payment, please ensure they are aware of the refund.
